Setting Saturday: Terran Republic

The largest human government in the history of mankind, the Terran Republic occupies an area of space approximately 60 light years in diameter. With several hundred different major population centers (including orbital habitats), the Empire divides itself into regional districts, each with their own governors and defense forces. The proper name for the state is the Interstellar Republic of Terra, but it is derisively referred to as the Terran Empire by its former colonies and other dissidents.

The Republic, at the highest levels, is governed by the High Senate, members of which are elected from the more local District Senates by the District Senators. In areas where ruling by committee would be of a great detriment, the High Senate appoints Secretaries who hold considerable power within the Terran Republic even though they ostensibly still report to the High Senate. The two most well-known Secretary positions are the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, who control the military and diplomatic corps respectively.

The interstellar colonies and outposts that would eventually form the modern stellar nations were established in the years after the successful voyages of the UNSS Nina, UNSS Pinta, and UNSS Santa Maria in 2052. As the number of colonies founded under the United Nations Extra-Solar Colonization Act of 2060 grew, the unwieldiness of the United Nations became exacerbated by communication delays between the colonies and Earth. Eventually, the United Nations collapsed as the more powerful member-states withdrew their support from the organization. Without the United Nations to mediate disputes, international relationships deteriorated, becoming what we now call the Third World War. The conflict lasted a staggering twelve years and rewrote the geopolitical map of Earth almost completely.

In the wake of the unprecedented horrors of WWIII, the Terran Republic was formed. The newly formed High Senate looked to the scattered colonies to repair the ruined economy of Earth, and took control of the orbital habitats and Lunar colonies immediately. Over the short span of a decade, the Republic not only rebuilt much of their former industrial power, but expanded it. And then they started the first interstellar war.

The Colonial War began on August 28th, 2083 when the 1st Republic Fleet jumped to the Alpha Centauri system and attempted to seize the orbital colonies there. The fleet was not expecting a heavily armed starship group belonging to the Centauri Mercantile Alliance there, nor were they expecting a new kind of weapon to be used by the Alliance’s boarding parties, called battle armor. The battle ended when, much to the surprise of the 1st Republic Fleet, the orbital colonies made hyperspace jumps, ending the Battle of Alpha Centauri abruptly.

In December of 2085, the Republic unleashed its own surprise weapon of war, based on the simple industrial frames that had been in use since the 2030s; the battle frame. Twenty-five M50-7A Legionnaire battle frames were attached to the 32nd Republic Battalion, and were instrumental in defeating the Proxima Centauri milita, who had been equipped by the Centauri Mercantile Alliance with battle armor and strikers.

On February 28th, 2100, the Terran Republic formally ended its war against the rebel colonies, seemingly unable to hold any claim it made beyond the thirty light year limit of a single hyperspace jump from Earth. Sullen, the Republic withdrew to this border and began consolidating and building. The stellar nations that formed out of the chaos of the First Colonial War breathed a collective sigh of relief, thinking their antagonists had had their fill of violence and war.

They were wrong. In 2118, the Terran Republic struck the Centauri Mercantile Alliance in a lighting war using a new modular type of battle frame- the gear.
